We are a scout-led troop that emphasizes
the "outing" in scouting. We have monthly outings and
four one week-long trips during the year. Our outings
range from canoeing, camping, boating and winter sports
and to get a better idea of them, check out our reviews
of past
events.
The troop has been in existence for over 40 years and
have developed over 60 Eagle Scouts, which is Scouting's
highest rank, to this date. This troop is sponsored
by the parents of the boys in Troop 494. Active parent
participation is a vital element in the strength and
success of Troop 494. We currently have 7 Eagles on our current roster. The organization also sponsors a Venturing Crew.
Rendezvous
We meet in the Multi-Use Room at Kennedy Middle School
located at 821 Bubb Road, Cupertino, California every
Wednesday from 7:30-8:30 PM during the school year,
except during school holidays. During the summer, we
have a reduced schedule and we meet at Linda Vista Park.
During our meetings, we work on Scout skills, plan for
our outings, advance if necessary, and bond together
by playing in games that revolve around teamwork. Both
of the locations can be found here.
Origins of the Scouts
The troop has about 100 scouts that come from Faria A+
Elementary, Stevens Creek Elementary, Regnart Elementary,
Lincoln Elementary, Garden Gate, Cupertino Middle School,
Lawson Middle School, Sunnyvale School, Kennedy Middle
School, Miller Middle School, Hyde Middle School, King's
Academy, Bellermine, Cupertino High School, Monta Vista High School
and other great schools in Cupertino and surrounding
areas.
What do Scouts do?
Troop 494 offers the chance to enjoy the outdoors, to
build character, and to develop valuable leadership
skills. Scouts go on outings every month throughout
the year as well as one-week long camps. Through these
outings, the scouts are able to learn skills ranging
from knots and lashings to first aid skills. Lastly,
the scouts are able to augment their leadership skills
through positions in the troop as well as attending
Junior Leader Training. Check out the calendar to see
what we have in store for the upcoming months.
Boy Scout Oath
On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my Country and to obey the
Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and
morally straight.
Boy Scout Law
A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly,
Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave,
Clean, and Reverent.
Scout Motto "Be Prepared"
The Scout motto means that you are always ready to do
what is necessary to help others. It also means you
are ready, willing, and able to do what is necessary
in any situation that comes along. You are also being
prepared to live a full and worthwhile life, being a
physically fit, honorable citizen of strong character.
Scout Slogan "Do a Good Turn
Daily"
This does not mean that you should do just one Good
Turn during the day and then stop. It means you should
always be looking for extra opportunities to help others,
quietly and without boasting. Remember that a Good Turn
is an act of kindness, not just something you do because
it is good manners. Good Turns should be done for family,
friends, adults, children, and especially for those
that are not able to do the task themselves.
