Outing Consent Form

Remember your signed consent form is required fro each outing. We're following a new procedure which is to have the signed form placed inside the pocket of the class A shirt and is part of your uniform. Since a scout always needs to wear his Class A shirt either going or returning from an outing, it will be with him regardless of which car he is in.

What's New at Troop 494

What's The Really BIG News at Troop 494?
We're splitting into two troops!!!!! As we've grown to over 100 scouts, the troop will be dividing so that we can make the meetings and outings more manageable and enjoyable. Troop 494 will continue to be led by Ed Snyder and the new troop, Troop 493 will be led by Mark Fisher. The same chartered organization will still sponspor both troops and it is sponsoring the crew as well. The official start date for the new troop will be Feb. 1, 2010, but there will be separate meetings in January as the troops form new patrols, elect the senior leaders and choose patrol leaders.

Newest Eagle

Congratulations to Timothy F, our 75th Eagle!!! Timothy becomes the 4th member of his family to achieve Eagle joining his older brother Stephen, his father and his uncle.

Eagle Court of Honor
Prithvi has scheduled his court of honor for January 20th at Quinlan. Please join his family to celebrate his accomplishment. RSVP to Prithvi's family. For scouts that need five or ten outings/troop events, the Eagle Court of Honor counts towards this requirement

PHILMONT 2010
The troop has garnered two crews for Philmont in July 2010. Please contact Mr. Fisher for more information. Spaces are already claimed so get your deposit in if you have a spot and if you don't have a spot, you get on the waiting list. Scouts are expected to prepare for Philmont by participating on practice hikes and going to at least one of the multi-day backpack trips. There are two major facets to the training- improving physical stamina and developing crew teamwork.
Part of Philmont is that some of the members must complete Wilderness First Aid Training.Wilderness First Aid is a 16-hour course that goes over providing emergency medical care when help is not readily available. There is a course scheduled for the end of August at Chesebrough. Contact Mr. Fisher to sign up.
Wilderness First Aid is valuable knowledge when participating on a trek. Contact Mr. Fisher if you want to take this 16-hour advanced first aid course. It will be held Saturday and Sunday August
Upcoming Outing - Backpacking in the Sunol Regional Wilderness

January's outing will be backpacking in the Sunol Wilderness area, off of I-680 between Fremont and Pleasanton. The Philmont crew hiked along this trail as part of their training, but started at Del Valle. This will be a shorter hike, but expect some ups and downs. A special permit is required for each backpacker.

For more on this outing, see the Future Events page.

Venturing Crew Notes:
The crew will be meeting on Sunday, December 27th to go skeet shooting at the Los Altos gun club. If you are 14 or older and want to join this outing, you must check with Prithvi or one of the venturing adult leaders. The cost is $20 and a signed waiver is required. If you have not shot with the crew before or have not earned the shotgun merit badge, you will have to attend a special safety check.
